Menopause in women… and men

Die Wechseljahre bei Frau… und Mann

When we think of the menopause, we usually think of the woman's menopause and a period of discomfort. But does this time necessarily have to be accompanied by severe physical and psychological problems and does it only affect women ?

No!

We will explain to you how best to cope with the period of hormonal changes and that men can also go through menopause.

What happens during a woman's menopause?

During the fertile years , various hormones control the female cycle, including estrogen and progesterone, which are produced in the ovaries. They ensure that the eggs mature and ovulate and that the uterus prepares for the implantation of a fertilized egg.

During menopause, ovulation occurs less and less often and the ovaries produce fewer and fewer hormones. First, the production of the hormone progesterone is usually reduced , then the production of the hormone estrogen slows down.

If the production of progesterone decreases earlier or more strongly than the production of estrogen, then what is known as estrogen dominance occurs. This means that the ratio of the two hormones is no longer correct. Since the two hormones need each other to work optimally, this imbalance is one of the main causes of many menopausal symptoms .

In addition to estrogen and progesterone, the ovaries also produce a bit of testosterone. Testosterone also decreases during menopause , but not as much as female hormones. This is the reason why some women appear a little more masculine during their menopause (beard, hair thins, etc.)

Menopause usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 58 . But they can also become noticeable from the age of 40.

In summary, one can say that the body is in a severe hormonal imbalance during menopause:

    • Too little progesterone
    • Too little estrogen (but too much estrogen in relation to progesterone)
    • Too much testosterone (relative to the other hormones)

Fortunately, menopause, like puberty, is a temporary period during which the organism has to reorganize itself. However, how long it takes for the body to find a new hormonal balance again is very individual.

Since the sex hormones not only affect our reproduction, but also have many other functions in the body, the entire body has to deal with the hormonal changes. During this time, the change becomes noticeable with more or less severe menopausal symptoms .

Possible symptoms during menopause

      • Hot flashes
      • sleep disorders
      • Dry mucous membranes
      • Dry and thin skin that tends to form wrinkles more quickly
      • Being overweight (even though you don't eat more or exercise less than before)
      • Thyroid dysfunction
      • Heart palpitations and racing hearts
      • Psychological problems such as mood swings, irritability, depression, anxiety
      • Fatigue, listlessness, lack of concentration
      • Hair loss
      • Joint and muscle pain
      • Osteoporosis (due to the loss of bone substance)
      • Higher risk of cardiovascular disease
      • Etc.

Fortunately, you are not necessarily helpless to deal with the unpleasant symptoms of menopause. There are many ways to support the body during hormonal changes.

Can men also go through menopause?

The answer might surprise you, but yes, men can go through menopause too . The affected men suffer from falling testosterone levels and therefore also from the associated symptoms.

Menopausal symptoms in men can include:

      • Decreasing libido
      • Less frequent morning erections
      • Irritability, dissatisfaction, fears
      • Lack of energy and tiredness
      • Losing muscle strength and muscle mass
      • Lower sporting performance and lower performance in everyday work
      • Hot flashes and sweats
      • Less beard and chest hair growth
      • Increased abdominal fat deposits
      • and much more.

The symptoms of testosterone deficiency mentioned here show what tasks testosterone normally has in a healthy man: It gives strength and assertiveness , ensures a healthy libido and potency, increases bone density and allows body hair to sprout.

As already mentioned, women also produce testosterone, but in much smaller amounts than men.

A key difference between men's and women's menopause is that the woman loses her fertility, while the man does not necessarily. However, both are a time of hormonal changes and declining hormonal performance.

Holistic measures for menopause

The period of hormonal change can cause unpleasant physical symptoms for both women and men.

Non-hormonal treatment options are often used as an alternative to hormone replacement therapies because they are often associated with risks, side effects and restrictions on use. Alternative treatment options include the use of vital substance preparations, relaxation techniques, healthy nutrition, TCM and much more

The following applies to both men and women: the better the body is supplied with nutrients and micronutrients , with secondary plant substances and antioxidants, with exercise and sunlight, as well as with relaxation and rest, the better it can cope with the hormonal change and the fewer complaints will occur and the better the aging process can be delayed.

Of course, a healthy acid-base ratio, well-functioning digestion and a strong immune system play a crucial role here.

3 tips for women

Tip #1:

Provide yourself with nutritional supplements that will help you relieve the symptoms of menopause. For example , L-tryptophan and magnesium can be used to treat sleep disorders that often occur during menopause. The amino acid L-tryptophan has a positive effect on mood and the sleep-wake rhythm. Magnesium relaxes the muscles and protects the nervous system.

The hormone melatonin also has a regulating effect on the internal clock and can even slow down the aging process by strengthening the immune system and protecting against oxidative stress. Melatonin is the only molecule that can be easily converted into any hormone we know of!

Hot flashes, exhaustion, depression, as well as irritation/dryness in the vagina can be significantly alleviated by vitamin E. At HS Activa we will soon have Vitamin E in our range, stay tuned!

Tip #2:

Strong and frequent hot flashes can be caused, among other things, by fluctuations in blood sugar levels and hyperacidity. So make sure you eat a balanced, alkaline diet.

We also recommend that you lose excess weight and exercise a lot . Women who exercise regularly suffer less from hot flashes than women who avoid exercise.

Tip #3:

In order to counteract a severe hormonal imbalance and thus generally severe symptoms during menopause, we also recommend that you:

      1. Make sure you get enough rest and relaxation , as stress has been proven to lower progesterone levels.
      2. Take care of your liver health , because it is the liver's job to break down excess and unused hormones. In particular, the antidepressants that are often prescribed during menopause massively disrupt the functioning of the liver enzymes.
      3. Lose excess weight! Fat cells produce additional estrogen and increase hormonal imbalance.
      4. Reduce your dairy product consumption. Milk often has an extremely high estrogen content, which has a negative effect on our hormonal balance.
      5. The plasticizers , which are found in almost all plastic bottles (water, cola, Fanta, etc.), pass into the liquids and, according to studies, lead to an excess of estrogen, which leads to feminization in men and masculinization in women! This also means that female births are increasing significantly!

3 tips for men

Tip #1:

HS Activa Maximus

Our plant-based and completely chemical-free complex of Tribulus Terrestin, Maca and Zinc Citrate.

      • Tribulus Terrestris is said to promote, among other things, muscle and strength growth (anabolic effects), but also increase libido and potency. This is made possible by increasing the concentration of testosterone in the body.
      • Maca has a performance-enhancing and potency-promoting effect. It has a positive effect on fertility and also increases it
      • Zinc is extremely important for the formation of sex hormones (e.g. testosterone), thyroid hormones, growth hormones, insulin and prostaglandins. Without the presence of zinc there is no hormone formation! Zinc takes on the role of a biocatalyst here!

Tip #2:

Magnesium, vitamin D3 and B vitamin complex.

      • Magnesium has extremely positive effects on the sexual organs and hormonal balance and is therefore often used in impotence therapies or fertility treatments.
      • Vitamin D3 is involved in many important body processes. A falling testosterone level can also be one of the symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency. On the one hand, along with zinc, magnesium and the B vitamins, it is responsible for the formation of testosterone. On the other hand, it is involved in regulating testosterone levels.
      • Vitamin B complex : The body should be supplied with sufficient B vitamins, as most of the B vitamins are involved in testosterone production at some point.

Tip #3:

In order to avoid an early decline in testosterone levels at a younger age (30-40 years), various influencing factors must be taken into account that have a negative impact on testosterone levels :

      • Overweight: The female hormone estrogen is particularly produced in the abdominal fat tissue. This means that the fatter the stomach, the lower the testosterone level. Reduce sugar consumption!
      • Stress: the stress hormone cortisol lowers testosterone levels
      • Exercise: Sufficient physical activity with strenuous effort raises testosterone levels. True to the motto “Use it or lose it”.

Special tip for men and women:

Red Panax / Ginseng
Ginseng is one of the best-known medicinal plants in Asia. But the plant is also well received in Europe due to its complex effects.
