Further information

That's why vitamin C is so important

Vitamin C daily requirement

There is strong controversy about the optimal daily requirement. The DGE sets a vitamin C requirement of 0.030 – 0.075 g of vitamin C per day. However, various scientists consider this recommendation to be far too low due to today's environmental conditions.

The two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling even went so far as to recommend a daily intake of 10 – 20 g. Pauling based his recommendation, among other things, on the fact that animals such as goats, cows, dogs and cats produce comparable amounts of vitamin C every day. Regardless of the scientific dispute surrounding this statement, it must be stated that vitamin C is completely harmless. Excessive intake can lead to loose stools.

Vitamin C absorption in the body

Because of its water solubility, vitamin C should be taken throughout the day.

Important: The greatest loss of vitamins occurs through heat, light and oxygen. Do not use metal spoons.

Bioflavonoids improve vitamin C absorption. Bioflavonoids are plant active ingredients that synergistically improve the effect of an active ingredient.

Magnesium activates vitamin C. Vitamin C preparations alone are therefore not of much use if the magnesium level is too low. So make sure your magnesium levels are balanced.

Vitamin C effect in the body

  • Vitamin C strengthens the immune system : Vitamin C is involved in strengthening the immune system so that it can protect the body against pathogens, cell degeneration, radiation, etc.
  • Vitamin C is an important antioxidant: it intercepts free radicals in the blood, in the brain, in the body's cells and directly in the cell nucleus and renders them harmless. Otherwise, the free radicals would damage cells and tissues.
  • Vitamin C strengthens the connective tissue: Vitamin C fuses protein and other substances into collagen fibers and thus strengthens the connective tissue. Collagen ensures the elasticity of skin, ligaments, tendons and blood vessel walls as well as the strength of teeth and bones. Scar tissue is also made of collagen, which is why vitamin C is so important for wound healing.
  • Vitamin C serves as vascular protection: Collagen is an important component of the vessel walls, so vitamin C contributes significantly to healthy and elastic vessels. The antioxidant properties of vitamin C also protect the vessels and prevent cracks from forming in the blood vessel walls, whereupon harmful deposits would form there. Vitamin C even has a blood-thinning effect and therefore prevents all diseases associated with arteriosclerosis (high blood pressure, angina pectoris, heart attack, stroke, heart attacks).
  • Vitamin C improves calcium and iron absorption: Calcium and iron are better absorbed in conjunction with vitamin C. Vitamin C converts the two substances in the intestine into more available forms and thus ensures that they enter the bloodstream more easily.
  • Vitamin C is important for the effectiveness of some hormones: The hypothalamus in the brain is the control center for hormone production. Vitamin C is involved in a process in the hypothalamus that is essential for some hormones to be effective at all. For example, vitamin C is B. important for the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine and thyroxine as well as for the stress hormones adrenaline and norepinephrine.
  • Vitamin C detoxifies: Vitamin C activates the liver enzymes that are responsible for breaking down toxins. This means it can neutralize poisons such as cyanides, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde as well as nitrosamines and nicotine.

Vitamin C occurrence

Green vegetables, fruit and citrus fruits are considered the main suppliers.

To get 100 mg of vitamin C per day, for example, the following amounts of freshly harvested, non-heat-treated foods are necessary:

✅ Strawberries: 154g

✅ Kiwi: 141g

✅ Orange: 200g

✅ Broccoli: 164g

✅ Kohlrabi: 156 g

✅ Red pepper: 71 g

Further information about our vitamin C

We only use ascorbic acid and add bioflavovoids !

Why?

To understand this, a brief outline of the history of vitamin discovery is necessary, which can no longer be found in its entirety on the Internet.
The first person to have pure vitamin C in his hands was the Hungarian scientist Szent-Gyorgiy, who has made outstanding contributions to vitamin research. In 1928 he obtained the substance, which he called hexuronic acid, from animal adrenal glands.
Hexuronic acid was later renamed “ ascorbic acid ” around 1932. This has the molecular formula C6 H8 O6. In 1934, the Zurich researcher Reichstein was responsible for producing vitamin C synthetically.
The synthetic production of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is obtained by fermenting beet sugar by adding bacteria.
Sugar has the molecular formula C6 H12 O6. The added bacteria split off O4 and vitamin C remains. This vitamin C is absolutely (100%) identical to the vitamin C in fruits.
We at HS Activa add secondary plant substances (so-called bioflavonoids) to our vitamin C in order to optimize absorption through the intestines.
The well-known vitamin C from the acerola cherry is not easier to use , costs significantly more and has less vitamin C. The acerola extract used throughout only has around 25% vitamin C content.
This means that an intake of, for example, 750 mg only results in 187.5 mg of pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid).
